The biggest advantage of the system is that it reduces brand protection costs abroad.”
The Madrid System, consists of two international agreements, the Madrid Agreement signed in 1891 and the Madrid Protocol, signed in 1996. The system aims to make trademark registration procedures abroad easier and enables companies from member countries to submit applications for international trademark registration in member countries.
The number of member countries of the Madrid Protocol, which has been serving for more than 30 years, increased from 22 in 1988 to 122 by the end of 2019 with the participation of Canada, Brazil and Malaysia this year.
Orhan Eriman, Managing Director of the Istanbul-based brand and patent firm Markiz Patent which operates in the field of the international trademark registration, said: “The Madrid Protocol regarding the international registration of trademarks has brought great convenience to international registration process. The Madrid Protocol system allows you to register your trademark in many countries with a single application. It is possible to choose the desired country from the member countries. Additionally, it has provided very important advantages in terms of process and cost."
